Book Club News

The Global Literature Book Club
Monday, April 19th | 7:00 PM
Online via GoToMeeting

The Global Literature Book Club discusses prize-winning novels from around the world, in translation, selected by members of the club. These works are challenging, but gratifying, and provide insights into a wide variety of nations, cultures, and styles of writing. The club meets monthly on Monday nights at 7 pm (currently via Go To Meeting). We welcome new members.

In April, the Global Literature Book Club will discuss Compass by Mathias Enard. As night falls over Vienna, Franz Ritter, an insomniac musicologist, takes to his sickbed with an unspecified illness and spends a restless night drifting between dreams and memories, revisiting the important chapters of his life: his ongoing fascination with the Middle East and his numerous travels to Istanbul, Aleppo, Damascus, and Tehran, as well as the various writers, artists, musicians, academics, orientalists, and explorers who populate this vast dreamscape. At the center of these memories is his elusive, unrequited love, Sarah, a fiercely intelligent French scholar caught in the intricate tension between Europe and the Middle East.

Tea Time Book Club
Thursday, April 15th | 2:00 PM
Online via GoToMeeting

In April, the Tea Time Book Club will be reading Beheld by TaraShea Nesbit, a riveting story of a stranger’s arrival in the fledgling colony of Plymouth, Massachusetts–and a crime that shakes the divided community to its core. Suspenseful and beautifully wrought, Beheld is about a murder and a trial, and the motivations–personal and political–that cause people to act in unsavory ways. It is also an intimate portrait of love, motherhood, and friendship that asks: Whose stories get told over time, who gets believed–and subsequently, who gets punished?
